The Art of Observation

Before we can guide, we must learn to see. Observation is the discipline at the centre of Montessori training — watching the child with patience and respect.

Watch, don’t interrupt

Resist the urge to help too soon. The child’s concentration, once broken, is not easily restored.

Notice what attracts them

Patterns emerge with time: what draws the child, what they repeat, what they avoid. These clues guide our preparation of the environment.

Observation is not passive. It is the active, loving attention of the adult — and it can be learned.
