The First Years: Why 0–3 Matters
A short reflection on why the Montessori approach treats the first three years of life as foundational to all later development.

The first three years of life are unlike any other. During this period, the child builds the foundations of movement, language, and independence — capacities that shape everything that follows.
The absorbent mind
Maria Montessori described the young child as possessing an absorbent mind, one that takes in the environment whole, without effort or discrimination. This is why the prepared environment matters so deeply.
A foundation, not a head start
Montessori at this age is not about acceleration. It is about giving the child a rich, ordered, and respectful environment in which they can become themselves.
